Where do vegans get calcium?
Vegans get calcium from calcium-set tofu, fortified plant milks and juices, and low-oxalate greens such as kale, broccoli and bok choy. Spinach is a poor source despite its high calcium content, because oxalates block absorption. Roughly five servings across these foods covers the 1,000 mg adult daily requirement without supplements.

A cup of cooked spinach carries more calcium on the label than a cup of milk. Almost none of it reaches your bloodstream. Spinach binds most of its calcium to oxalic acid, and the body absorbs roughly 5% of what is there, against 30% or more from kale, fortified orange juice or dairy. The nutrition label tells the truth about content. It says nothing about availability, and for calcium that gap is enormous.
Why does calcium absorb so differently from different foods?
Because most plant calcium is bound to oxalate, phytate or fibre, and complexed calcium is calcium the gut cannot pull out. Spinach carries about 105 mg of oxalate per gram; kale carries about 2.8 mg per gram. Same mineral, same rough total per serving, wildly different fraction your body can use. There is a genuine exception worth flagging: soybeans are also high in oxalate, at about 35 mg/g, but still deliver reasonably bioavailable calcium. Oxalate content alone does not fully predict availability, because the plant's internal chemistry matters and not just the antinutrient tally.

How much calcium do you need?

Adults need 1,000 mg of calcium a day between ages 19 and 50; women need 1,200 mg from 51 onward, and everyone needs 1,200 mg past 71. For plant-exclusive eaters the NIH names a short, workable list: calcium-set tofu, fortified soy or almond milk, fortified orange juice, and the low-oxalate vegetables such as kale, broccoli and bok choy, rather than spinach or chard. If food alone does not close the gap, calcium carbonate (take with food) and calcium citrate (works on an empty stomach, and absorbs better for anyone with reduced stomach acid) are the two standard supplement forms, best taken in doses of 500 mg or less at a time since absorption drops at higher single doses.
What does a day that hits 1,000 mg look like?
Start by reading the number correctly. It is written as intake, not as calcium absorbed. A thousand milligrams is what goes in your mouth, not what reaches your skeleton. Net absorption in adults runs around 25%, and it moves inversely with how much you eat: roughly 45% at an intake of 200 mg a day, down to about 15% above 2,000 mg. So the number to hit is 1,000 mg of intake, and the ranked table above decides whether that intake is worth anything.

In practice that is soy milk on cereal or in coffee at breakfast, half a block of tofu in a lunch stir-fry or scramble, kale and bok choy as the dinner vegetables with the bok choy going in the same pan, and white beans in a soup, stew or salad anywhere in the day. Nothing exotic, nothing bought from a supplement aisle.
Two caveats. The absorption fractions come from single-serving studies, so you cannot add up the right-hand column and treat the sum as what your body kept. Absorption drops as the daily total climbs, which is the same reason supplement doses are capped at 500 mg. And calcium-set tofu only counts if it is genuinely calcium-set, so check the label for calcium sulfate; tofu set with magnesium chloride carries a small fraction of the calcium.
Where does calcium get lost?
Getting it in is only half the job. Calcium leaves in urine, and diet drives how much. Salt is the big one: sodium and calcium compete for reabsorption in the kidney, and every 2,300 mg of sodium takes roughly 40 mg of calcium out with it. That bites hardest for people already low on calcium. Caffeine adds a smaller, dose-proportional loss for a few hours after drinking, and the body never adapts to it. Protein raises urinary calcium too, though the loss is offset once calcium intake is adequate, which puts the fix back on intake. Greens do a second job here: kale and other leaves carry the vitamin K that bone mineralisation runs on, plus magnesium and potassium, and roughly 60% of the body's magnesium sits in bone.
What should you do?
If you eat plant-exclusively: the day above is the whole answer. You do not need to track this daily, you need two or three of those foods to become habits, and salt kept moderate. Spinach is not off-limits, it just should not be your calcium plan.
If you do not: dairy is not an automatic pass either. The NIH flags postmenopausal women as a higher-risk group regardless of diet, since the body absorbs and retains less calcium after menopause, and children and teenagers are commonly under target too. "I drink milk" answers less of this question than it seems to.

Checking a label for "high in calcium" only answers half the question. The other half is what kind of calcium it is, and spinach fails that second question about as badly as a food can.
